“We share a commitment to throw light on the still obscured shadows of the Holocaust.”
-- Declaration of the Stockholm International Forum on the Holocaust
The American Jewish Committee (AJC) launched the initiative “Protecting Memory: Preserving and Memorializing the Mass Graves of Eastern Europe” at the AJC Berlin Ramer Institute in 2010. Building on Yahad – In Unum’s important work and funded by the German Foreign Office, a coalition of international partners set out to implement pilot projects at five killing sites in Ukraine: Rava-Ruska, Kysylyn, Ostrozhets, Prokhid and Bakhiv. Mass grave boundaries were established and an architectural competition was held in order to realize appropriate memorials for each site, which were dedicated in June 2015. Achieving a sense of local ownership was considered instrumental. Educational materials and teacher training programs have been implemented in cooperation with the Ukrainian Center for Holocaust Studies in Kiev.
