State Act

Thursday 24th, the Senate of Spain held a State Act in commemoration of the Day of Remembrance of the Holocaust and the Prevention of Crimes Against Humanity. The act was led by the President of the Senate, Pío García Escudero. Official speeches were given by the Minister of Justice, Dolores Delgado, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Josep Borell and the President of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Spain. Senators, members of the Jewish Communities leaded by the Rabbi Moshé Bendahan and diplomats of the embassies of Israel, Poland, Switzerland and Lithuania were also invited.

Moreover, the President of the Roma Community and the Vicepresident of the Amical Mauthausen gave speeches in the memory of these victims groups of the Holocaust. A musical piece was played between each intervention. Jacobo Drachman, survivor born in Poland, lit the first candle in remembrance of the 6 million Jewish children who were assassinated by the Nazis. The other five candles were lit by students and teachers, members of the LGBT and Roma community, the Ambassador of Israel in Spain Mr. Daniel Kutner, the daughter of the survivor Violeta Friedman and the daughter of Angel Sanz Briz, the Spanish diplomat who saved millions of Jewish from Hungary, amongst others.
