On 4 July 1941 in Gogola Street, Riga, the Choral Synagogue was burned to the ground by Nazis and local collaborators with people locked inside. This date that marked the beginning ofthe Holocaust in the territory of Latvia, and is dedicated to remembrance of all the Jews that were killed in the Holocaust during the Nazi German occupation of Latvia.
This year the commemorative event, marked each year since October 1990, was held in the presence of the President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis; the Speaker of Parliament, Ināra Mūrniece, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis; the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Edgars Rinkēvičs and other officials. The President and the Speaker delivered opening speeches.
Members of the diplomatic corps, and leaders and members of the Jewish community were also in attendance.
Latvia has been a member of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance since 2004.
