In February 2018, IHRA Chair, Ambassador Benno Bättig, travelled to New York City to join the Consulate General of Switzerland in New York, the Consulate General of Israel in New York, and Rabbi Arthur Schneier at Park East Synagogue to commemorate the actions taken by Carl Lutz. ‘An Evening Dedicated to the Legacy of Carl Lutz’ payed tribute to the legacy of Carl Lutz, who rescued more than 60,000 Jews from the Holocaust, among them Rabbi Schneier. Between 1944 and 1945, Mr. Lutz worked together with his team and Jewish organizations to save tens of thousands of Hungarian Jews by issuing collective passports and letters of protection. Agnes Hirschi, step-daughter of Carl Lutz, met Rabbi Schneier for the first time and presented a new book collecting testimonies of the rescues by her step-father.
During his stay in New York, Ambassador Bättig visited the Jewish Heritage Museum. Michael Glickman, President & CEO of the museum guided Ambassador Bättig through the museum’s exhibits and collections.
