IHRA Chair Lord Eric Pickles responds to the recent violence in Amsterdam, calling for greater accountability from sports authorities and officials in countering aggression and fostering respect.
IHRA Chair Lord Eric Pickles states:
“Last night’s attack on Maccabi Tel Aviv football fans in Amsterdam, the home of Anne Frank, is deeply shocking. Everyone, from the football authorities and the police to fans, is responsible for ensuring that scenes like these are never repeated. The Dutch authorities are correct in pledging to bring the perpetrators swiftly to justice.
Earlier in the year, and in partnership with the World Jewish Congress and Maccabi GB, the UK IHRA Presidency launched a guide to implementing the IHRA working definition of antisemitism for sporting institutions. The need for this guide was amply demonstrated on the streets of Amsterdam.
European football is on trial for its responses to antisemitism. It is in everyone’s interest to create a culture of safety around stadiums and in all sports.”
